She then attended Holy Cross College and passed Higher School Certificate examination
Suborna passed SSC exam from Viqarunnisa Noon School. She later earned Master of Arts (honors) degree in English from Dhaka University. By the time she was attending university, she had already been acting professionally, having started acting in the late 1970s.
Her roles include appearing as one of the main characters in Dolls House (2007–2009), a Bengali-language dramaserial which first aired on ATN Bangla, a Bengali-language digital-cable television channel based in Dhaka.
Suborna Mustafa was also a film actress during the 1980s. She acted in several films.
Though commercial success eluded her, she was very successful in independent films. She was very popular for her portrayal of serious and bold roles in films which other actresses refused to do.
She acted in New Bride (1983), Palabi Kothay (1986), Shankhanil Karagar (1991) and The Distance (2004).
Suborna Mustafa directed a single-episode play, “Akash Kushum” for ATN Bangla which was popular on its time. She will direct another single-episode play titled “Shunno.” Additionally Suborna herself has dramatised the play. Traupa Majumdar and Jitu Ahsan will perform the lead characters in the play.
Though she is testing her hand as a director, Suborna does not want to continue in her new role.
She said, “Acting is everything to medical I do direct plays for relaxation, as sometimes I write.She also acted in a lot of successful films like Shonkonill Karagar, Rakkosh, Durroto and many more.”.
