Sukumar Chandra Sirkar was born on April 19, 1898 in Nadia, India.
Sukumar Sirkar graduated from Calcutta University in 1920, became Master of Science in 1925 and Doctor of Science in 1933. He did research in Molecular Spectroscopy and was Specialist in Crystal Structure.
Sukumar Chandra Sirkar served as reader in Physics at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) in Kolkata in 1943, radiologist at Inspectorate of Ammunition in Kirkee in 1944, lecturer in physics at University of Calcutta in 1945-1947, also as professor and head in 1947-1952 and Mahendra Lal Sircar Professor of Physics (1953-1963), Department of Optics, IACS, Kolkata.
He toured U.S.A. and U.K. and was asecially interested in X-Rays. He wrote about 100 articles and research papers.
Sukumar Chandra Sirkar carried out extensive work on Raman effect, X-rays and crystal structure, Kerr’s effect, electric moment of molecules, and cosmic rays. He did some experiments on the origin of extra Laue spots in the vicinity of Bragg reflection from crystals. Sukumar Chandra Sirkar showed that experimental data were more in accord with the theory put forward by Zachariasen than that by Raman. He did some work of significance on ultraviolet absorption spectra of conjugated aromatic molecules in gaseous, liquid and solid phases as well as when dispersed in rigid matrices at low temperatures.
