Background
She was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but eventually the family ended up in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania.
(Inspired by her in-laws' recollections of working in coal...)
Inspired by her in-laws' recollections of working in coal country, Susan Campbell Bartoletti has gathered the voices of men, women, and children who immigrated to and worked in northeastern Pennsylvania at the turn of the century. The story that emerges is not just a story of long hours, little pay, and hazardous working conditions; it is also the uniquely American story of immigrant families working together to make a new life for themselves. It is a story of hardship and sacrifice, yet also of triumph and the fulfillment of hopes and dreams.

(As Noah’s wife sings the animals to sleep, an age-old tal...)
As Noah’s wife sings the animals to sleep, an age-old tale is told afresh in a soothing poetic form brought to life with beautiful collage illustrations. Naamah is the wife of Noah, and her name means "great singer." For forty days and forty nights, as the ark tosses on storm-wracked seas, Naamah sings. She sings to the animals, two by two. She sings to her husband, her sons, and their wives. She sings, and they all sleep, finally at peace. Acclaimed author Susan Campbell Bartoletti’s rhythmic, lyrical text pairs with Caldecott Honor winner Holly Meade’s luminous collage for a cozy, tender lullaby, and an ode to the power of song.

Gabriella loves to dance, and she loves to hear her grandmother Babci’s stories--stories about Poland, the house in the coal patch, the chickens with blue feet. And especially the stories of those happy evenings long ago when Babci danced with her handsome young husband, Dziadziu. Gabriella and her grandmother are bound together by stories, by dancing, and by love in this poignant Easter story. “A wonderfully mature story, full of humanity.”--Kirkus Reviews

( Here in lyrical prose is the story of the flag that ins...)
Here in lyrical prose is the story of the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words that became the national anthem of the United States. This flag, which came to be known as the Star-Spangled Banner, also inspired author Susan Campbell Bartoletti, who, upon seeing it at the Smithsonian Institution, became curious about the hands that had sewn it. Here is her story of the early days of this flag as seen through the eyes of young Caroline Pickersgill, the daughter of an important flag maker, Mary Pickersgill, and the granddaughter of a flag maker for General George Washington’s Continental Army. It is also a story about how a symbol motivates action and emotion, brings people together, and inspires courage and hope.

She was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but eventually the family ended up in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania.
She graduated from the University of Scranton in 1982.
And Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler"s Shadow. Campbell Bartoletti began her career as an eighth-grade English teacher before deciding to pursue writing in earnest. Seeing her student write and create original work, she was inspired to create her own.
In connection with her students, Susan said that "I felt immense satisfaction in watching my students grow as writers.
I wanted to practice what I preached, so I joined a writers group and got serious about my own writing." She sold her first short story in 1989. Three years later, in 1992, Campbell Bartoletti published her first picture book, Silver at Night.
She held a rigid routine, waking early in the morning in order to write before she left to teach. In 1997, she turned to writing full-time.
She teaches writing classes at a number of Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs, among them Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, and Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia.
Additionally, she leads workshops offered through the Highlights Foundation. She currently resides with her family in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
