Susan Crean was born on February 14, 1945 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is the daughter of John Gale Crean and Margaret Elizabeth (Dobbie) Crean.
During the period from 1965 to 1966, Crean attended the University of Florence. In 1967, Susan graduated from the University of Toronto, where she got Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. Two years later, in 1969, Susan attained Master of Arts degree at the same university. The following year, in 1970, she graduated from the École du Louvre.
Also, from 1972 to 1973, she attended York University.
In 1970, Susan started to work as a broadcaster and journalist in Toronto. Television and radio projects included work on Canadian programs, such as The Great Canadian Culture Hunt, Quarterly Report, The Uneasy Union, To Work Again, Hostages of History, There Never Was an Arrow, A Question of Country, Night Lights and Airwars.
Since 1973 to 1974, she worked as a lecturer and presenter of papers on Canadian, feminist and television issues at various locations. During the same period (1973-1974), Crean served in the Mayor’s Task Force on Cultural Policy in Toronto.
During the period from 1976 to 1979, she served as a member of editorial board for the magazine "Canadian Forum". Since 1980, Susan Crean was a member of editorial collective of the magazine.
In 1982, Crean was appointed a contributing editor of the magazine "Quill & Quire", a post she held till 1985.
In 1986, Susan Crean was a distinguished visitor to the University of Alberta. She also served as a research and tutorial assistant at different universities and colleges.
Currently, Crean lives in Toronto.
