(A boy risks his life to save some very special children i...)
A boy risks his life to save some very special children in this fantasy adventure rife with “moments of real beauty and mystery” (Kirkus Reviews), set amidst the rich backdrop of Renaissance Venice. In Renaissance Venice, the secrets of glassblowing are guarded jealously. Renzo, a twelve-year-old laborer in a glassworks, has just a few months to prepare for a test of his abilities, and no one to teach him. If he passes, he will qualify as a skilled glassblower. If he fails, he will be expelled from the glassworks. Becoming a glassblower is his murdered father’s dying wish for him, and the means of supporting his mother and sister. But Renzo desperately needs another pair of hands to help him turn the glass as he practices at night. One night he is disturbed by a bird—a small falcon—that belongs to a girl hiding in the glassworks. Soon Renzo learns about her and others like her—the bird people, who can communicate with birds and are condemned as witches. He tries to get her to help him, but discovers that she comes with baggage: ten hungry bird-kenning children who desperately need his aid. Caught between devotion to his family and his art and protecting a group of outcast children, Renzo struggles for a solution that will keep everyone safe in this atmospheric adventure.

(Bryn’s world is out of kilter. Pollution is causing weird...)
Bryn’s world is out of kilter. Pollution is causing weird weather and diseases that her mom, a scientist, was working to fix. But Mom disappeared on a research expedition in Alaska, and now Dad has gone off to find her. At least Bryn gets some comfort from kenning with her bird—though that ability makes her weird as well. Things get seismic strange when Bryn discovers a huge egg in a box of her mother’s stuff—and it’s hatching. What emerges is a big baby lizard, and Bryn can sense its feelings, as she can with birds. Bryn guesses the lizard is a cryptid—an ancient species thought to be extinct. That makes it valuable to black market poachers, and maybe valuable to her mom’s work as well. Bryn is determined to keep the creature safe. But it’s not easy to secretly raise a cryptid baby, especially when it starts to flame. For what Bryn really has is a baby dragon, a dracling. The poachers will be after her for sure. But what does it mean that Bryn can ken with it? Is she meant to protect it? How far will Bryn go to save what might be the last of its kind?

(Grade 5-7?Fans of Fletcher's Dragon's Milk (1989) and Fli...)
Grade 5-7?Fans of Fletcher's Dragon's Milk (1989) and Flight of the Dragon Kyn (1993, both Atheneum) will welcome this return to Elythia, while new readers will be inspired to seek out other titles in the series. Once again, dragons are threatened by bounty hunters and a young girl must find a way to lead them to safety. The heroine this time is Lyf, Kaeldra's frail foster sister. Fletcher frames her tale with the comments of a sly harper, a device that adds humor and suspense to the telling as well as offers a glimpse of Lyf's fate after the adventures are over. The story itself is fast paced and features a multiplicity of characters and events. While characterization of minor players is sometimes tantalizingly brief, it's a measure of the author's skill that many readers would prefer to linger with her lively creations, especially the young dragons. Lyf's development from a cosseted child to a determined, self-reliant protector of those in need takes place gradually and believably, while her unique talent (an ability to enter the consciousness of birds) plays an important part in the tale's resolution. Youngsters will appreciate the fact that despite the presence of caring and helpful adults, it is Lyf, Kaeldra's young son Owyn, and other children who effect the ultimate deliverance of the threatened draclings. Given the perennial popularity of the subject matter and Fletcher's engagingly accessible style, this book should be popular in most libraries.?Lisa Dennis, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.
