(Long before my mother was born, her aunts owned a store i...)
Long before my mother was born, her aunts owned a store in a small village in Maine. They had a smart gray horse who pulled a shiny black buggy when they went out riding. Prince was the finest horse in town. But no one remembers who took care of that beautiful animal while the aunts were working in their store: perhaps it was a sneaky trader who tried to steal him, perhaps it was a one-legged harmonica player who taught him to dance; perhaps it was two children who once saved Prince's life. Jacqueline Briggs Martin really did have two great-aunts who owned a horse like Prince.

A little Red Hen lived in a house, with a frisky dog, a cat, and a mouse. So begins this fresh look at a beloved old fable. The little Red Hen's frisky housemates – Dog, Cat, and Mouse – would rather play than settle down to daily chores such as planting, cutting, and grinding wheat. But when the wheat is used to make a delicious cake, the little creatures are more than happy to help eat it! The Little Red Hen tells them that they can only eat the cake if they promise to help her work.

2008Quotations: "The book is a recipe and you get to add your ingredients. Depending on what the basic ingredients of the recipe are, you’re looking for different things to include. It’s nature, it’s other people’s work, and it’s just so many different things. Who the heck knows where it comes from? And you never know, something may just hit you".
