She is the author or co-author of several books and numerous articles in linguistic anthropology, language and gender, and social history of Eastern Europe.
The book The Politics of Gender After Socialism by Susan Gal and Gail Kligman won the 2001 Heldt Prize, awarded by the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. In 2002 Gal was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for the study of language ideologies and political authority during and after socialism.
