Susan Hertog was born in New York City, New York, United States.
Susan Hertog graduated from Hunter College and earned her Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University School of the Arts in 1993.
After graduating, Susan became a freelance journalist and photographer. She and her husband, Alliance Bernstein Vice Chairman Roger Hertog, established and fund the Hertog Fellowship, which provides Hunter and Columbia MFA students the opportunity to work as research assistants alongside some of the world's most celebrated writers, including Salman Rushdie, Jonathan Franzen, and Richard Ford.

1999Susan is married to Roger Hertog, businessman, and financier. They have three grown children.
Roger Hertog is president of the Hertog Foundation and chairman of the Tikvah Fund. One of the founding partners of the investment research and management firm Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., which he joined in 1968, Mr. Hertog served as the firm’s president before its merger with Alliance Capital Management in 2000. In 2006 he retired from the successor company, AllianceBernstein, and is currently vice-chairman emeritus.
