Susan R. Rubinstein was born on May 17, 1946, in New York, United States.
Susan Rubinstein attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California (1969), having earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design from the American University in Washington, D.C. (1968). She spent a year at the School of Visual Arts in New York City (1967) and a year studying at the University of Florence, Italy, in 1966.
An instructor at both the International Center of Photography (since 1979) and Marymount Manhattan College (since 1978) in New York City, Susan Rubinstein taught at Hunter College in 1978, and in the Learning to Read Through the Arts Program in Staten Island that same year. Susan Rubinstein was artist-in-residence at the Apeiron Workshops in 1979. Her photographs explore reality and illusion.
