Susan Beth Eder was born in 1950 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States.
Eder received her BA in 1972 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and an MA from Ohio State University in 1974.
Eder is a freelance calligrapher and illustrator. Previously she was employed as an instructor at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1979, and in 1977-79 she was a part-time lecturer at North Adams State College in North Adams, Massachusetts. She also worked as a part-time instructor for SUNY at Morrisville from 1975 to 1977.
She was also awarded a CAPS Fellowship in Photography in 1977.
Utilizing 35mm and 110 formats, the photographer uses "photographic images as signs for objects rather than as aesthetically pleasing compositions, often cropping and splicing the photos to remove extraneous information." The processing and printing of her work are done commercially.
