(Poetry. Holocaust Studies. Each poem in this marvelous co...)
Poetry. Holocaust Studies. Each poem in this marvelous collection is special and perfect in itself. Appearing in this almost devastatingly emotional work are a variety of people in different countries, times and tragic situations. Susan Terris' unique craft and vision illuminate and intensify the poetry until it goes far beyond the original intent and then we take over. This book must be read by everyone with a conscience, a sense of history, a need to know. Whether it is an adult who experienced the Holocaust or knew of its existence or a young person on the edge of knowing, this book is a gift and a revelation (Ruth Daigon). A very powerful collection (Robert Sward). Susan Terris lives in San Francisco. She has had 21 books of fiction published and her poetry is widely published in such magazines as Antioch Review, Calyx and Nimrod.

(Early one morning Harold Henry pulled in his fishline and...)
Early one morning Harold Henry pulled in his fishline and found a pair of leather boots onthe end. He wore them home and brought a fish for his mother and a dead mouse for his cat. Somehow he gave the mouse to his mother and threw the fish to his cat. When he blamed the new boots for his naughtiness, his mother took the boots and gave them to his more deserving sister. Edith Ellen. But when she chopped up the clothes and ironed the carrots, their mother was so furious that she yanked the boots off and slipped into herself. When Basil the Barber got up and found his wife burping the pig while the baby cried from the pig pen, he was enraged. It was a backwards day confusing day for all as the boots were passed from one person to another until the mischievout foot gear was finally returned to the sea.

(Poetry. Even as "sailors know a storm/ is close when all ...)
Poetry. Even as "sailors know a storm/ is close when all their knots have drawn tight," so these taut, intricate poems enact the dramatic encounter of opposing forces: high Romantic flight meets gravity's tow, Chagall's floating figures ride the tornado, fire exacts its inevitable toll as the dramer awakens--eloquent, unrepentant"--Eleanor Wilner. "Susan Terris's poetry is exquisite and extraordinary. Her poems exhibit an intellectual verve and a linguistic brilliance that are remarkable; what is more, this collection is both powerful and heart-breaking. There are few poets who can so deftly orchestrate the dramatic dilemmas of the daily with the profound wisdoms of the larger world. Restrained, wise and compelling, this book continues to burn long after it has left the reader's hands"--David St. John.
