She is the university"s 17th Principal and Vice-Chancellor, and assumed her new responsibilities September 5, 2013. From January 16, 2006 until March 4, 2013 she was the President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council), a Canadian government division that provides grants for research in the natural sciences and in engineering. Born in Saint-Timothée, Quebec, Fortier received her Bachelor of Science
(1972) and Doctor of Philosophy (1976) from McGill University.
Her research interests are in the field of protein crystallography. She joined the Chemistry Department at Queen"s University in Kingston, Ontario, eventually serving as Vice-Principal (Research) (1995-2000) and then Vice-Principal (Academic) (2000-2005), before taking leave from Queen"s to lead Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.
