After graduating from high school in 1966, Poppema went on to the University of New Hampshire. There she majored in political science while also fulfilling all of the pre-med requirements. An excellent student who very much enjoyed her studies in chemistry and biology, she had been seriously considering a career in medicine since at least her mid-teens. She received from the University of New Hampshire her B.A. in 1970. Next, Poppema obtained from Harvard University her M.D. in 1974.
During the mid-1970s, Poppema worked as a medical director of a feminist nonprofit health collective in Seattle, Washington. Later she became family physician in city and county health clinics in Denver, Colorado, in 1978-1979.
Besides, Poppema was a family physician in private practice in suburban Seattle from 1980 to 1988. Since 1986 she worked for Aurora Medical Services, Seattle, as medical director.
Suzanne also served as medical director for a hospital-affiliated women’s health center and alcohol-treatment program in the Seattle area during the 1980s.
Dr. Poppema served as president of the National Abortion Federation from 1998 to 2000.
Suzanne is currently the director of International Medical Consulting in Seattle, Washington, and is a retired associate professor of family medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
