Sven Rasmusson is a Swedish lawyer based in Stockholm, whose practice has covered corporate, commercial, real estate, banking, and securities law. He trained in law at Stockholm University and built his career in Stockholm law firms, including Gunnar Lindhs Advokatbyrå, which later became part of DLA Piper's Swedish practice. He has also held numerous company board positions.
Background
Sven Rasmusson was born on March 12, 1953, in Jönköping, a city in southern Sweden. His professional life later unfolded in Stockholm, the country's capital and the center of its legal profession.
Sweden's legal profession is organized around the advokat, a title reserved for members of the Swedish Bar Association. Rasmusson's career followed this path from legal education into private practice in the Swedish capital.
Education
Rasmusson studied law at the University of Stockholm, where he received the juris kandidat degree in 1980. The degree is recorded in English as a Bachelor of Laws.
The law faculty of Stockholm University began its activities in the autumn semester of 1907 as the Department of Political and Legal Sciences, with seven professorships and 81 enrolled students. The faculty later moved from central Stockholm to the Frescati area, where it occupied new premises in the early 1970s.
Today the standard Swedish law education is a 4.5-year programme leading to the juris kandidatexamen, a qualification required for professions such as judge, attorney at law, and prosecutor.
Career
Rasmusson's documented legal career centered on Stockholm law firms. He worked at Gunnar Lindhs Advokatbyrå HB, a firm whose registration in the Stockholm trade register in February 1940 was made by the lawyer Gunnar Bengt Theodor Lindh. Lindh was called up for military service on Gotland shortly after the registration, and the practice later developed into the firm now known as DLA Piper Sweden.
The firm grew into one of Sweden's leading commercial law firms. Its documented practice areas included corporate, commercial, tax, real estate, intellectual property, labour, banking, securities, international legal transactions, arbitration, and civil litigation. It was also a member of Pannone Law Group EEIG, a European Economic Interest Grouping whose member firms had offices in London, Manchester, Guernsey, Paris, Lyon, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Rome, Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, Brussels, Geneva, and Lisbon, among other cities.
Rasmusson later practised as a partner at Lindhs DLA Nordic. He subsequently ran his own firm, Rasmusson & Partners Advokat AB, a Stockholm company registered in 1989 whose stated purpose is to conduct legal advocacy exclusively. Company registry records list him as a board member and as the person controlling the company. He has also held numerous board positions in other companies.
Membership
Rasmusson is a member of the Swedish Bar Association, known in Swedish as Sveriges advokatsamfund. The association was founded in 1887 as a voluntary body of academically trained lawyers, and it gained official recognition when the Swedish Code of Judicial Procedure entered into force in 1948. Its members hold the exclusive right to use the professional title advokat, which is protected by Swedish law.
