Lodgaard, Sverre was born on April 6, 1945 in Tröndelag, Norway. Son of Emil Andreas and Ingeborg (Morseth) Lodgaard.
He graduated from the University of Oslo in 1971. Magister degree in political science and supportive degrees in sociology and economics (1971).
He was director of European Security and Disarmament Studies at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) from 1980 to 1986, of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) from 1987 to 1992, of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research from 1992 to 1996 and of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs from 1997 to 2007. In 2007 he stepped down as director, but continued as senior research fellowship He chairs the Board of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights (since 2015).
Lodgaard has been member of the United Nations Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (1992-1999), and member of the Council (1992-2002. since 2007) and Executive Committee (2007-2013) of the Pugwash Conferences of Science and World Affairs. He has been on Norway’s delegations to international conferences on arms control.
Has chaired the international affairs committee of the Norwegian Labour Party (1999-2005). And has been deputy member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
