Khorkina studied at Belgorod State University at the faculty of physical training. She is the candidate of pedagogical Sciences (defended a thesis at the Russian state Academy of physical culture in 2002.)
Svetlana competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics, the 2000 Summer Olympics, and the 2004 Summer Olympics. Throughout her career, Khorkina won seven Olympic medals and twenty World Championship medals. She was the first gymnast to win three all around titles at the World Championships and is still the only female gymnast ever to do so.

She was elected as a member of the United Russia party to the Russian State Duma in 2007 . She is a deputy chairwoman of the Duma’s Youth Affairs Committee. She lost her seat after the legislative election in 2011.
Svetlana married to Oleg Cohnov since 2011. They have a son: Svyatoslav Khorkin.
