Head of the Moscow Research Institute for Eye Microsurgery. One of the world leaders in the application of microsurgery. Invented several new medical techniques including radial keratotomy (minute radial incisions of the eye-retina) for shortsightedness.
Opened an ophthalmic clinic in Moscow in the 1970s which charges foreigners £200-300 an operation in order to raise hard currency to pay for more Western technology. Appeared in a BBC2 television series, Comrades, to describe his conveyorbelt system for processing patients. Enjoys a lavish lifestyle, with two homes, a dacha and servants.
His leisure activity is riding. His method has gained recognition in the USA. Gave several lectures in London, October 1988.
