Tan, Swee-Lian was born on July 9, 1949 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Daughter of Chong-Ghee Tan and Nancy Beow-Heong Teh.

Bachelor in Agricultural Science with 1st class honors, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, 1973. Doctor of Philosophy, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, 1993. Master in Agricultural Science, University Agriculture Malaysia, Serdang, 1980.

Career

Research officer Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, Serdang, since 1973, coordinator miscellaneous crops research programs, 1985-1990, head field crops research program, 1991-1996, head sweet potato breeding research project, since 1996. Deputy director Industrial Crops Research Center, 2002—2005. Consultant Plantek (Malaysia) Company Ltd., Petaling Jaya, 1994-1995, Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, Serdang, 1995-1996.
