Syd Field was born Sydney Alvin Field on December 19, 1935, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, United States.
Syd was educated at Hollywood High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at the University of California, Berkeley in 1960. Then, at the suggestion of one of his instructors, the filmmaker Jean Renoir, he entered UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television.
Syd Field began his career doing freelance work in the 1960s. He worked as a writer, producer, and director, and researcher on some 125 TV documentaries. After freelancing he began to write screenplays. Out of the nine that he wrote in seven years, four were optioned. That's when Field took a job as a screenplay reader and then went on to teach a college course on screenwriting. He took his notes and curriculum from the course that he taught and turned it into a manuscript. An agent in New York bought it.
The Screenwriters Workbook is Field's follow-up to Screenplay and was also very well received.
Field served as a consultant to the Film Preservation Project for the famed Getty Center.
At the Writers Guild of America, West, Field chaired the Academic Liaison Committee. He was a faculty member of the University of Southern California's Master of Professional Writing Program, and he taught at Harvard, Stanford, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Los Angeles, the American Film Institute (AFI), as well as many other prominent institutions. Also, Field served as a special script consultant for 20th Century Fox, Disney, Universal, and TriStar Pictures.
The governments of Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, and Norway hired him as a creative screenwriting consultant; and Field collaborated with such noted filmmakers as Alfonso Cuarón, James L. Brooks, Luis Mandoki, Roland Joffe, and Tony Kaye.
By special invitation of numerous Ministries of Culture, Field has taught throughout Europe, Asia, South America, and Canada. He was the keynote speaker at International Film Festivals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Berlin, and Oslo, and he was the President of the International Film Jury at the Flanders International Film Festival in Ghent, Belgium.
Field's installment, Going to the Movies: A Personal Journey through Four Decades of Modern Film, again illustrates his theories on screenwriting, but also provides an autobiographical account of his personal involvement in the film industry.
In the book, The Definite Guide to Screenwriting, Syd Field tells you step-by-step how to identify and fix common screenwriting problems, providing the professional secrets that make films brilliant - secrets that can make your screenplay a success.
Field has written several screenplays, including Spree and Los Banditos. He has also worked as a writer on television documentaries and television pilots.
