(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1905 Excerpt: ...are provided. Flats at Bexhill (Figs. 137 and 138).--Seaside flats at present are not a success, and few have been built. These are a good example of suites over shops, and are some of the few flats in this section that have lifts. Each serves four suites, and there are the consequent long passages. These buildings have also the advantage of two W.C.'s to two of the suites on each upper floor. St John's Park Mansions, Tufnell Park (Fig. 139).--The frontispiece of this book shows the exterior of these buildings; several blocks were erected. In all suites except the one at the end, the passages are dependent upon borrowed light. The side of the bathroom is entirely glazed, and it is ample. The width of the front bedroom was fixed by the frontage available; some tenants use it as a sitting-room. Another 2 ft. would have been a great improvement, but it was impossible to manage it. There are coal and bicycle sheds at the rear, and there is an external door under the stairs to give access to the trade lifts. If these buildings could have been built with a toplighted staircase, the saving would have been considerable, and the tenants would have had larger rooms and better dwellings. One porter looks after several buildings. There are electric bell pushes outside the main entrance doors. These are, of course, closed at night. Each tenant has a pass key to open his door and the main entrance door. The cost of these buildings is referred to in Chapter VII. Paddington Street and Northumberland Street (Fig. 140).--A building by Professor Beresford Pite. There are two W.C.'s, one in the bath-room. There is no scullery, but a small pantry is provided. Fig. 140A is the elevation; an excellent example of the good work that can be done at small expense. Fig. 56 shows the p...
