(In this rediscovery of the meaning behind the songs of wo...)
In this rediscovery of the meaning behind the songs of worship, S. Paul Schilling takes a new look at Christian hymns and at the words regularly sung, but seldom really appreciated. The author is concerned that may worshipers pay little attention to what they affirm when they sing, and may even sing vigorously what they don't believe at all! To bring about better understanding, he identifies, interprets, and evaluates the theological convictions voiced in representative hymns. Exploring dominant themes found in songs currently used, he deals systematically with major beliefs about God, humanity, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the church. Schilling utilizes some sixty Protestant, Roman Catholic, ecumenical, and independent hymnbooks to encompass the treasures of historic hymnody and numerous new hymns of strength and beauty. He also considers gospel hymns, folk hymnody, and inclusive language. Pastors, church musicians, and all who enjoy singing hymns - in all denominations - will find their lives enriched by THE FAITH WE SING.
