Excerpt from Platform, Press, Politics Play: Being Pen and Ink Sketches of Contemporary Celebrities From the Tone to the Thames, Viâ Avon and Isis A friendly "Punch" Reviewer, when noticing one of my earliest contributions to the periodical press after the beginnings of slow recovery from an illness brought on by twenty-five years overwork, kindly wished me "health and happiness;" humorously adding, "All will look forward now to what Mr. Escott cannot look forward to himself, - his reminiscences." This suggestion I have ventured to take seriously. Of that interpretation this volume is the result. I can only hope that my kindly critic of the "London Charivari" will not find reason to regret his original mention of the idea; or the public, my best and steadiest friend throughout my career, to resent my literal and practical adoption of the complimentary proposal. This book was first published rather more than five years ago, when, in its original two-volume shape, it passed through two considerable editions. A third edition was subsequently published in a single volume, and of this that now issued is, so far as shape and size are concerned, as nearly as possible, a facsimile. The work, however, has undergone material modifications. Many parts of it have been completely rewritten, while throughout it has been carefully revised, corrected, and, generally, brought down to date. It may therefore, to some extent, claim to be a new work. At the same time its organic structure has not been changed and the remarks with which I prefaced it in 1879 are therefore applicable to it now :T he object of this book has been so fully explained in the first chapter that it scarcely seems necessary to inflict a Preface upon the reader. Yet there are some things which could not well be stated in the body of the work, and which it may not be amiss here briefly to set forth. My purpose has been to present the public with as complete and faithful a picture of contemporary England as the limits of space and opportunity would allow. That I might do this the better, I have devoted much time to the collection of materials, I have made several visits to diflerent parts of the country, I have conversed with, and lived amongst, many varieties of people. The facts given are those ot observation and experience, and whatever there is of description in this volume may, at least, claim to be a transcript of what I have seen.
