T. Williams was born in 1934. His education, legal training and professional career were all centred in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, where University College Dublin and the McCann FitzGerald firm were based.
Williams studied at University College Dublin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. The institution was founded in 1854 as the Catholic University of Ireland, with John Henry Newman as its first rector. It was renamed University College in the early 1880s and placed under the direction of the Jesuits.
Under the Universities Act of 1908 it became a constituent college of the National University of Ireland, and it was known as University College Dublin from that year. Its legal education was therefore part of an Irish university tradition that developed from the Catholic university movement of the nineteenth century.
Williams was admitted to the bar in 1956, and his documented professional career includes a partnership at McCann FitzGerald, a Dublin law firm. The firm originated in 1947 as McCann White & FitzGerald, a Dublin solicitors' practice whose founding partners included Alexis FitzGerald, who later served as a senator. Its name was later shortened to McCann FitzGerald.
Williams worked with the firm as a partner, the senior position in a practice owned by its partners. Today McCann FitzGerald describes itself as one of Ireland's leading full-service law firms, with offices in Dublin, London, New York and Brussels.
