Background
Tadaaki Chigusa was born in 1336. A descendant of the Murakami Genji Family, he was the son of Aritada, who was a Vice-Minister of the Court.

During the Genkono-ran civil war in 1331, he fled with Emperor Godaigo to Mt. Kasagi but they were captured by Shogunate forces. He accompanied the emperor when he was exiled to Oki Island in 1332. The following year, he brought back the emperor to Hoki Province (Shimane Prefecture) on a small fishing boat. With the assistance of Nagatoshi Nawa, the local warlord, Tadaaki caused a temporary palace to be built on Mt. Senjo. From this headquarters, an Imperial order was issued to warlords of all parts of the country to destroy the Shogunate. The emperor returned to Kyoto, supported by Morinobu Ota, Norimura Akamatsu and other loyal warriors who had responded to the Imperial command. With new headquarters at Nishiyama Minedo near Kyoto, the Imperial forces fought Shogunates troops and finally captured Rokuhara, the Shogunate headquarters, with the assistance of Takauji Ashikaga. The Emperor returned to the Kyoto Palace and awarded a high Court rank to Tadaaki for his exploits. In 1335, Takauji rose in revolt and Tadaaki fought him at Seta, Omi Province. Takauji's forces were routed and fled to Kyushu. Six months later, Takauji came back and attacked Kyoto. Tadaaki died in defending the capital at Sakamoto.
