Education
Since his childhood he studied French under his father and entered Tokyo University as an honor student of the Fukui Clan (1870).
Career
Went to Paris (1878) to work at an international fair held in the French capital. Since that time, he kept an art shop there and was devoted to introduction of arts to Europe. Returned home (1904). The Goncourt brothers owed much to him for their study of ukiyoe.

Son-in-law of Tachu Hayashi, a scholar of Dutch.
