Tadasaburo Yamamoto was born in 1873 in Okayama, Japan.
Tried his hand at various trades till he entered an agricultural school in Sapporo, Hokkaido. After graduating he came under the patronage of Inazo Nitobe, who secured for him a contract to reclaim 100,000 tsubo (about 80 acres) of waste land along the Ishikari River (1900).
After four years of hard work Tadasaburo Yamamoto completed the job successfully after which he set himself up as a trader and began importing sleepers, coal and iron from China and also began a shipping concern. During World War I, his business thrived and he became a millionaire.
