He became the State Minister for Environment and later on the Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs & Northern Areas in the cabinet of Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali. He did not participate in the 2008 general elections. In the 2013 general election, he was reelected to the National Assembly of Pakistan.

He joined PML (North) after meeting with party chief Mian Nawaz Sharif on 24 November 2011.

In 2002, Iqbal became a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from NA-60 Chakwal on the ticket of PML (Q).
