Taichi Tanabe was born on October 21, 1831.
His father being a retainer of the Shogunate, he received his early education at the Shoheiko (Shogunate college).
In 1864 he was a member of the entourage which accompanied Ikeda, Lord of Chikugo to Europe, and again he went to France (1867) in the same capacity with Akitake Tokugawa, where he attended the International Exhibition at Paris.
After the Meiji Restoration (1868) he served with the Foreign Ministry. He was sent to Europe once again (1871) with envoy Tomomi Iwakura. When Toshimichi okubo was sent to China (1874) over the Formosan issue, he accompanied him as adviser and proved very useful.
Later he was elected the Diet.
He also excelled in poetry.
