Taiga Ike was born in Kyoto, the son of Hishiya-Kaemon, a fan merchant.

He studied painting under Kikyo Yanagi and was later inspired by a collection of paintings Chih-mu (Chinese) literary school which was Riven him by Nankai Gion.
Later he modelled his works after Ibukyu (I Fu-chiu) and other Sung and Ming painters and then originated a style of his own and won great fame.
A simple man at heart he left behind many aneedotes. Was fond of travelling and climbed many mountains, including Fuji, HakUsan and Tateyama.
