Taijin Konko was born in 1814.
Taijin Konko was originally a farmer at Bitchu Province (Okayama Prefecture). He became conscious of the mutability of life when at the age of 27 his uncle, brother-in-law and several others of his relatives died one after another in a short space of time. Deeply affected, Taijin resolved to devote himself to the service of the people.
During the Ansei Era (1854-1860) Taijin is said to have received a divine message urging him to leave the farm and become a servant of God. Taijin immediately complied, disposed his property and confined himself to a room for meditation, in which he founded the sect now known as Konkokyo. The doctrines of this sect are said to be very simple and they believe that the real God is the Creator of world and heaven. The sect has 82 dogmas, one of which says "Heaven and earth are our homes, whether alive or dead." It was later instituted as a sect of Shintoism in 1885. It is said to have about two million adherents.
