Taini Yamagata (real name: Masasada) was born in 1725, in Kai Province, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. He was a descendant of Masakage Yamagata, retainer of Shingen Takeda.

Taini Yamagata studied under Mitsuaki Kagami, Hakuji Gomi, etc., and was well versed in Japanese classics, astronomy, geography, medicine, arithmetics and tactics.
In 1756, Taini Yamagata proceeded to Edo and ran a private school. During his lectures on tactics, he used the conditions of various clans as examples and, hence, was watched by the Shogunate.
Taini Yamagata was a supporter of the Imperial Family and wrote Ryushi-Shinron, advocating restoration of Imperial authority.
Taini Yamagata was involved along with Umon Fujii in a treason charge and was executed.
