Taira no Tsunemasa was born in Japan. He was the son of Tsunemori.
When the Tairas were about to flee Kyoto for western Japan (1183), he called on Priest Prince Shukaku at the Ninnaji Temple and returned the Seizan (Blue Mountain), noted biwa, which the latter had given him. This he did for fear that the instrument might be lost in the hostilities. He played on the instrument for the last time and composed a waka poem fo r the Priest Prince. Then he was killed in the Battle of Ichinotani.
