Taishun Ugai was born in 1846 in Aichi, Japan.
After studying at the Zoji Temple in Edo came into contact with Tatsuo Kumoi and began taking active part in the Loyalist movement. As result of this Taishun Ugai was arrested in (Mie Prefecture) and imprisoned at the Taukudajima Jail in Edohile there he preached Buddhism to other prisoners and converted many of them into other ways of living. In recognition of this he was released and became a Daihug (master teacher) (1874).
