Taizen Sato was born in 1804 in Japan. His given name was Nobukado and his pseudonym Koen. He was the eldest son of Nobutaka, a wealthy man in Shonai (Yamagata Prefecture).

Taizen Sato was born in 1804 in Japan. His given name was Nobukado and his pseudonym Koen. He was the eldest son of Nobutaka, a wealthy man in Shonai (Yamagata Prefecture).
He studied medicine under Choshun Adachi and Choei Takano. Afterward he went to Nagasaki and studied under Dutch physicians including Johannes Erdewin Niemann for four years.
He began practicing at Nihonbashi, Edo (1840) and later opened Juntendo Hospital in Sakura (Chiba Prefecture), this being the first private hospital in Japan. He also opened a medical school. Became physician in ordinary to Lord Hotta of the Sakura Clan (Chiba Prefecture). He retired and lived in Yokohama, leaving his hospital to his adopted son, Shochii.
