He studied at Keio University from 1868 and later joined the Education Ministry. He went to the United States for study in 1876.
Career
After returning to Japan, he left the Government service and founded the Meiji Life Insurance Co. in 1881 and the Meiji Fire Insurance Co. in 1891. He was a pioneer in Japan's insurance business.
