Records show that Takakane Takashina was the second son of one Takachika, and that he rose to become chief artist to the Imperial Court. In some sources he was born in 1309 and died 1330.

He is credited with being the mastermind who painted the famous Kasuga-gongen-genki in 20 volumes, displaying in detail the miracles of Buddhism. His other works are a history of the Ishiyama-dera Temple and a nicture scroll revealing the secrets of the Hosso Sect.
