Takata Nisetsu was born in Toyama Prefecture.
During the Meiji Restoration (1868) his family's fortunes declined and he had to join government service.
Fame came to him overnight after he exhibited some of his tray landscapes at the Ueno Fine Arts Exhibition. Later became instructor of tray landscapes at the Hosokawa school.
