Takatsukasa Kanehira was born in 1228. He fourth son of Konoe Iezane.
After holding some high-ranking positions in the court, in 1252 he was appointed Sessho and became the head of the Fujiwara clan. In 1254 he was appointed Kampaku. In 1290 he retired and became a priest.
He was made Sadaijin (Minister of Left) (1246) and was high councilor and personal adviser to the Emperor (1254). Entered a monastery (1290).
