Takiemon Ishikawa

Background

Takiemon Ishikawa was born in Miyagi Prefecture and belonging to the Date clan.

Career

Takiemon Ishikawa settled in Kawabe county (Akita Prefecture) and taught sericulture to people in that district (about 1780). Later moved to Akita City and began trading in silk (1784). He was ordered by the clan lord to take charge of industry.

Achievements

• Takiemon Ishikawa invented the Akita Azeori (sort of cloth used for skirts), the Kinran (gaudy cloth) and Chtjimi (crepe). Contributed much toward the development of the silk industry.
