Gojō Tamami was born in 1903 in Akita Prefecture. Her real name was Ine Satake. At the age 18, Gojō Tamami assumed the name of Tokuji Hanayagi and then changed it to Tamami.

Gojō Tamami practised dancing of the Tomoe School since she was only six years old, under the direction of her mother. At the age of 15, she came to Tokyo and studied dancing of the Hanayagi School.
In 1941, she succeeded to the Gojo School and became its head.
The first public performance of the Tamami Company organized by Gojō Tamami was held in 1930.
