Her parents emigrated through Siberia to China. Grew up and studied ballet in Paris at the Olga Preobrazhenskaia Ballet School. From 1933 until 1938, star with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.
Appeared with the Original Ballet Russe, 1940, the Ballet Theatre, 1940-1945, the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas, 1949, and the Festival Ballet, 1952-1954. With the Paris Opera, 1947-1950 and 1956. With LaScala, 1951-1952 and 1956.
Worked closely with George Balanchine, Leonid Miasin and Serge Lifar. Played Anna Pavlova in an American film.
