Tamechika Okada was born in 1823. His other family name was Reizei. Son of Nagachika Kano, he was adopted into the Okada family.

Tamechika Okada studied Yamatoe (Japanese adaptation of Chinese painting, which originated in the Heian Period and was perfected m the Kamakura Period and which branched out into the Tosa and Kano schools in the Muromachi Period) by himself when young, before he became a disciple of Kazue Uklta.
Okada Tamechika was appointed Shikibu Shojo (a high rank in the Court's Ceremony Bureau). Although he endeavored to bring about a compromise between the Court and the Shogunate, he was blacklisted as pro-Shogunate by Loyalist ronin. To escape ssassination, he fled to the Kogawadera Temple in Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture) and became a priest assuming the name of Shinrembo Koa. He later hid himself in Sakai (near Osaka) and Tambaichi (Nara Prefecture). In May, 1864. he was tricked and murdered by ronin.
