TameLomo Kuroki was born in 1844. He was the son of a retainer of Satsuma Clan of Kagoshima Prefecture.

First TameLomo Kuroki distinguished himself in the Boshin Affair in Kyoto after which he followed the punitive expedition through Ou (northern Japan) (1868).
He was raised to the rank of Captain when the Imperial Guards was formed and took part in the Seirmn Affair (Rebellion of Takamori Saigo) and then he was promoted colonel (1877). TameLomo Kuroki was in command of the 6th Division in North China during the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) and in recognition of his services was created Baron (1895). After this his promotion was rapid: Commander of Imperial Guards and Military Governor-General of Western Japan with rank of general (1903), top military adviser and commander of 1st Army during Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). After he was sent to America (1907).
