Graduated from Tokyo University (1905) with a degree in applied chemistry.
Was appointed assistant professor at Nihon University. Went to America for further studies (1916) and upon return was made a professor at Tokyo University. He went abroad again (1919), this time to Europe.
His research of the chemical composition of Japanese petroleum secured him a doctorate, apart from an Academy prize. Is an emeritus professor at Tokyo University, a member of Gakujutsu Kaigi (Scientists' Congress) and on the staff of the Aviation Research Institute.
