Career
Tanaka Zenkichi was originally in the shipping business, but during a visit to Satsuma (1736), by the order of his clan lord, he took interest in the Cultivation of sugar cane and its ultimate refinement. While busy on this he took deep interest in the growth of haze (wax tree) and brought some seeds back to Kii, thus giving his home town a new source of prosperity as "Kii candles" soon came to be considered the best of their kind.
