Tanemichi Kujo was the biological son of regent Hisatsune and Sanjonishi Yasuko, eldest daughter of Sanjonishi Sanetaka (ja).
Tanemichi Kujo was first a Minister to Imperial Household and later Kampaku (adviser to Emperor). He held a regent position (kampaku) from 1533 to 1534.
In 1555, Tanemichi Kujo retired to become priest. Brought up in turbulent times of wars and battles, he traveled widely in western districts seeking shelter and finally came to rest at Sakaiura (Osaka Prefecture). It is said when Nobunaga Oda captured Kyoto, the courtiers received him with flattery in order to gain his favor, but Tanemichi remained aloof and never acknowledged his authority. Later he opposed Hideyoshi Toyotomi: first when the latter wanted to change his name to Fujiwara and again when he was appointed Kampaku (adviser to Emperor). Late in life Kujo Tanemichi retired to Tofukuji Temple where he devoted himself to study.
Kanetaka was his adopted son.
