Career
Taneyama Johachi was first employed in the bureau of public works (1871). He soon distinguished himself, and through the recommendations of his clan lord was entrusted with the building of the Nijiibashi Bridge at the Imperial Palace. Though this bridge has been rebuilt since, its foundation, it is said, is the same as laid by Johachi. It was he who also built the Nihonbashi and Manseibashi bridges in Tokyo. Retiring (1874) he returned to Kumamoto and built several bridges there.
