Tango-no- Tsubone was the daughter of Shojin, a priest of the Enryakuji Temple, and born as Yoshiko Takashina.
She was first married to Narifusa Taira, a confidant of ex-Emperor Goshirakawa, and bore him two sons and three daughters. The ex-Emperor took a liking to her, and when her husband was executed for trying to conspire against the Heishi, she became a concubine to him and bore him a daughter who is known in history as Princess Kinko.
In 1186, she was sent as an envoy to Kamakura to negotiate with Hiromoto Oe, representative of the Kamakura Shogunate, the question of land control and transfer procedures of property belonging to Imperial families.
After the death of ex-Emperor Goshirakawa, she helped his followers to unite against the Shogunate in Kamakura.
