Sugiyama Tangonojo was born in 1650 Kyoto, Japan. Real name: Shichirozaemon Sugiyama.
Learned joruri reciting from Kengyo Takino.
He went to Tokyo (1616) and started a puppet joruri theater. Often performed in the presence of the Shogun.
He opened a puppet theater at Shijo Gawara.
Tangonojo Sugiyama later became a Buddhist priest, calling himself Hozan Kochi.
He originated the Hizenbushi style of joruri recitation.
