Background
Tani Semba was born in Edo (now Tokyo) in 1885. He was the son of a former retainer of the Shogunate.

Education
He studied painting at an early age under Eisen Tomioka.
Career
He used to paint pictures of samurai for children's magazines and do illustrations for newspapers. In 1927 he illustrated a manual on horse riding for the military.
